"And so this is a classic example, I think, of evidence-based policymaking. It's not based on politics; it's not based on who's got more clout; it's not based on what certain constituency groups are looking for; but it's based on what works." - President Obama

Real reform must come from an analysis of the telos of education, which no amount of evidence can provide, and as long as we ignore the socio-political ideals that necessarily underlie educational policy we will never have an education system appropriate to our time.

Our education system doesn't hide its enslavement to late-industrial society.

"But the president and I want to send a message to everyone: governors and mayors, school board members and teachers, parents and students; businesses and non-profits. We all need to work together to win this race so that our students can outcompete any worker in the world."

"ED's mission is to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access."

I can hardly stand this guy's speech impediment, but this is important information on the contemporary state of education.

Arne Duncan at National Action Network Convention

At 4:20, Arne rallies behind the "all children should go to college" flag. This is an unrealistic and even unfavorable ideal. Some people will live better lives and be better for society if they attend a trade school or otherwise dedicate their efforts to a constructive field of work. The moral injunction to get educated does not exclude apprenticeship or self-education.

Report Says Principal Put Students in Cage to Fight

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/20/us/20dallas.html?_r=1&ref=education

"Mr. Moten, 56, is a former Dallas police officer who once lied about being kidnapped and robbed at gunpoint to get out of work, for which he was placed on administrative leave."

"The district found that Mr. Moten had pressured teachers to change the failing grades of athletes so they were eligible to play."

How do you not get fired from being a police officer when you commit fraud against the police? How do you not get fired from being a principle when you commit academic fraud?

I don't blog. My social network is full of people too poor to own a computer.
